Anointing of the Sick
Scripture
Jesus "summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits… He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.' So they went off and preached repentance. They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them" (Mk 6:7, 10-13).
Catechism
"The Church believes and confesses that among the seven sacraments there is one especially intended to strengthen those who are being tried by illness, the Anointing of the Sick: This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament. It is alluded to indeed by Mark, but is recommended to the faithful and promulgated by James the apostle and brother of the Lord" (CCC 1511).
"Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven" (James 5:13-15).
Please call the rectory if you or someone you know is hospitalized or homebound and would like the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. (Please remember to state whether the sick person is capable of receiving communion.)
