TO OUR HOMEBOUND: You matter to us!
If you are unable to attend Mass and would like to receive communion, please contact Janice in the office or 202-337-4835. Fr. Andy will be happy to come by. If you are homebound and would like a bulletin mailed to you, please let Janice know. She will be happy to get one to you every week.
Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing that asks God’s grace upon the elderly or sick person to offer them forgiveness of sins (spiritual healing) as well as physical and emotional healing. It provides Christ’s strength to a person suffering from illness. When someone is dying, Anointing of the Sick offers Christ’s loving peace as the person prepares to transition from this life to eternal life with God.
Anointing of the Sick is not only for someone at the point of death. It is, of course, for anyone who is in danger of death from injury, sickness, or old age, but it is also for anyone facing surgery or treatment for an illness, or anyone in failing health. In the past, Anointing of the Sick has been called Extreme Unction or “last rites,” but it is more truly understood as a sacrament of healing that offers Christ’s strength, healing, and peace.
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be received more than once. Each time a Christian falls seriously ill, he or she may receive the Anointing of the Sick, and also, when after receiving it, the illness worsens (CCC: 1529).
